Westmorland is largely a land of villages rather than towns. Apart from Kendal even the small towns are often referred to as large villages and very often have that kind of community atmosphere. However, this site in addition to Kendal will list Kirkby Lonsdale, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby, Ambleside, Windermere and Bowness as towns. Anywhere smaller will be called a village.
